SAY NO TO PLASTIC LUNCH BOXES

Lunch for the kids is something which keeps every mother’s mind pondering over for hours, and their main priority is always healthy food for kids. But mothers should also lay emphasis on the box in which the food for the kids is being packed. Almost everything in our homes, ranging from washing machines, coolers, chairs, are made of plastic but should the food also be packed in plastic containers?

Plastic containers contain chemicals that may leach into food kept in the container. And further, this may cause serious health issues for children and even adults.

Plastic containers, that have the chemicals bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, also known as endocrine disruptors, should be avoided. Both these chemicals are known to disrupt animal and human hormones.

It is almost impossible to avoid plastic containers completely, but lunch box for kids should be of steel rather than of plastic. Other than this, the goal of healthy food for kids can also be accomplished with the help of these simple things.

  1. Know the code – On the bottom of the plastic food container, is a small triangle with a number between 1 and 7. This number indicates the kind of plastic being used. Safest plastic for food storage is with numbers 1, 2, 4 and 5. Number 3, 6 and 7 are not suitable for storage purpose. While 3 or 6 leach chemicals, which may be harmful to children, 7  includes BPA-containing plastics called polycarbonates, which is again not suitable for storage purpose.
  2. Single use plastics– Never pick a lunch box for kids which is made of plastics designed for single use only. Plastics with code number 1 are usually meant for single use and could be used for refrigerating leftovers but couldn’t resist heat so they should not be exposed to high temperatures.
  3. Do not freeze – Plastics other than freezer-safe label should not be put in a freezer. Plastics that are not freezer-safe can deteriorate under freezer temperature which can further cause it to leach out chemicals into food.

So, obviously using plastic lunch box for kids is very harmful, we should rather opt for safer alternatives, like lunch boxes made of organic cotton or tempered glass and the most conventional option is stainless steel lunch box.
